Cellos at Belle Serre essentials: cello, bow…..and shades

With the wealth of cello ensemble music available these days, it’s a happy task choosing repertoire for each of the three Cellos at Belle Serre courses this summer. Last year’s superb Casino Royale arrangement for eight cellos by James Barralet took us all, and our audiences, by storm.

So, this year, Week 3’s advanced course cellists are taking on a mission which I hope won’t be impossible at all, James’s version of the Mission Impossible theme – here it is played by The Four Cellists:

Other new cello ensemble repertoire on the cards for each of the July courses includes Franck’s beautiful Panis Angelicus for five cellos, sung here ravishingly by Renée Fleming, and Brahms’s Geistliches Lied arranged for eight cellos. We’ll also dip into music by Schubert, Verdi, Bruckner, Byrd, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. Grab your shades and come on down to Belle Serre for a week of intensive study and intensive fun too!
