Short courses

CBS ‘Shorts’ – Cellos at Belle Serre short courses 2019

Cellos at Belle Serre is now entering its tenth year of courses welcoming cellists from all over the world; since the summer of 2010 we have had numerous intensive study visits and short courses throughout the year as well as the summer weeks held in July.  After nine glorious summers with you all, we are going to take a summer sabbatical, which means that there won’t be courses in July and August of 2019.
But, it’s ‘business as usual’ for the rest of the year when I’ll be focusing on intensive study visits (for one or more cellists) and CBS ‘Shorts’, bespoke short courses of up to five nights (for a group of cellists and also for small chamber groups). There are already several cellists and small groups from the UK, Switzerland and Holland booked in for lessons next spring. Please contact me to discuss a possible course for yourself or for you and your friends.
If you are interested in either a study visit or a short course, do let me know and we can discuss possible dates and the format of your visit. I create bespoke courses for groups of friends, either just for you and your friends, or otherwise teaming you up with other cellists of a similar level of experience and creating a course for you together. It could be with your local cellist friends, with your regular chamber group (piano trio, string quartet etc) or with friends you have met here on courses at Belle Serre.
Belle Serre is open for individual intensive study visits all year round except July and August, and for short courses from March to early July and from the end of August through to early December.
We have also had some very successful Cellos at Belle Serre Abroad short courses, where I travel to you and teach your cello group where you are rather than you coming here. I also give individual lessons via Skype – a handy way to work on your technique and performance when you need some guidance if you can’t travel here.

Programme: Saturday 13th October, 9.15am – 5.30pm

09.15 Welcome and registration

09.45 Lowri’s technical warm-up: a very informal group session exploring effective ways to warm up and imaginative ways to practise.

11.00 Coffee break followed by Cello Ensembles: Lowri will direct and play in an ensemble session for all participants. Whatever your level of experience, there will be a part to suit you. We’ll play two or more to a part – safety in numbers! Please let Lowri know your approximate standard. Parts will be sent to you in advance via e mail so that you can practise in advance of the cello day.

13.00 Lunch – please bring a picnic lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.

14.00 Master class: Lowri will give individual lessons to four cellists and all participants are invited to observe. Lowri’s tip – ‘As a student, I learnt as much, if not more, from watching my fellow cellists’ lessons as from my own. Whether you prefer to perform in the master class or observe, it’s an equally valuable experience.’

Please state in your application if you would like to perform in the master class and what you would like to play (either one piece or a movement from a larger work). Siobhain O’Higgins is our superb pianist for this afternoon class.

16.00 Tea break followed by Polishing and Performance: More cello ensemble time and after some polishing up of our group work, we will round the day off with a short performance for any friends and family who would like to join us. We will finish the cello day at 17.30.

Latest short course and cello day events news:

With study visits and summer cello courses getting under way here at Belle Serre in SW France and cellists flying in from the USA, Canada, Spain, France, Ireland, the UK, Holland and Norway, I’m also very much looking forward to two autumn cello days in the UK, one in Hampstead, North London on Saturday 14th October 2017 and the other in Winchester, Hampshire on Saturday November 18th 2017.

Click on these links for full details of the two autumn cello days: Hampstead Cello Day 14.10.17

Winchester Cello day: Cello day flyer 2

Bookings are open for both days; please contact me via this site or via lowri.blake@gmail.com to reserve your place for the Hampstead Cello Day. To reserve for the Winchester Cello Day please contact Dr L Pearce via email (pearcel@doctors.org.uk) also copying me in to the message, thank you. It is advisable to book as early as possible to ensure your place on one or both of the cello days, particularly if you wish to perform in the master class sessions.

Each of the cello days will comprise technical workouts and a cello clinic for finding imaginative ways to practise, an afternoon master class, with cello ensemble sessions both in the morning and in the afternoon to round off a full, intensive and fun day of all things cello. We will be working on different technical aspects and ensemble repertoire at each of these cello days, so if you are able to come along to both, you will have opportunities to play a wide variety of repertoire and work on a range of fresh ideas for your practice – do come and join us!

I will also be holding other cello courses at Belle Serre outside of the summer months: three, four and five-day courses for a range of levels: for elementary and less experienced players, for players up to intermediate level, and also for intermediate to more advanced level. So don’t worry if you are not free for the July courses or they are fully booked, there will be other opportunities to come and enjoy a cello immersion at Belle Serre!
Many of the short courses here at Belle Serre are bespoke courses created for you and your friends; if you and a cellist friend or friends would like to come to study together, please do let me know your preferred dates and I will organise a short course for you, which can be for your group alone or in conjunction with another group of friends also looking to study here together. These courses are very popular and a number of groups have returned several times over the years for a few days of intensive study and ensemble playing. Come on down!
Last year, we also organised our very first Cellos at Belle Serre Abroad, in Amsterdam, and I hope to hold further short courses abroad next year. If you and other cellist friends would like to hold some master class days or a study visit where you are, please contact me, thank you.

September Long Weekend cello course

I am holding a long weekend course at Belle Serre in September (arrivals Thursday 15th Sept evening, departures Monday 19th Sept morning). I would be delighted if you were interested in taking part or if you could pass on the news to fellow cellists who might like to take part.

The course is for intermediate level players (as a guideline, from approximately Grade 6 standard to post Grade 8 level and up to diploma standard/Cycle 2 – Cycle 3) who have some experience of playing in ensembles (orchestral, chamber groups, duos/trios etc). We will be concentrating on individual tuition, (a pianist will be available to play for all individual lessons), technique sessions and a Cello Clinic, and we will also work on several pieces for cello ensemble. We will give a very informal concert here at Belle Serre on the last evening performing solos and ensembles we have worked on during the course.

The cost of the September Long Weekend is £550/€690 (including tuition, meals and accommodation). A non-refundable deposit of £200/€250 is payable on booking and confirms your place on the course. There are six places available on the course.
If you and maybe other of your cellists friends or chamber group colleagues are interested in a short course but the dates of this long weekend are not convenient, do contact me and let me know dates that would suit you all better and I will organise other long weekends to suit your availability. I can also extend this long weekend at either end for any players who wish to come a day or two earlier or leave a day or two later.
